Costa Belik

Contemporary Painter

Working mainly in oil and watercolor, Costa Belik builds paintings around the images and experiences that stay with him. His training in drawing and painting provides a foundation for a visual language shaped through close observation and the act of making.

His subjects draw on memories of childhood, places encountered while travelling and moments of personal significance. A detail that first catches his attention may reappear across several works, gradually taking on a symbolic role.

Practice

Belik approaches each painting as a way of giving form to an experience. A remembered landscape, a familiar object or a passing impression can become the starting point for a composition.

Oil and watercolor offer different ways to develop that image. Color, surface, brushwork and line allow the subject to change as the painting takes shape, while recurring motifs connect one work to the next.

Portraits emerge when the subject calls for a closer attention to character. The gesture of a line or the weight of a brushstroke helps establish a person’s presence and refine the image he wants to convey.

Training & Visual Language

Studies in drawing and painting gave Belik a grounding in composition, color and form. He continues to build on that training by looking closely, returning to subjects and testing what the materials can do.

His visual language develops within this ongoing exchange between observation and practice. Repetition deepens his understanding of an image, while each new work gives him room to sharpen or reconsider it.

Artist Statement

I paint from things that remain with me: a childhood memory, a place I have visited, an encounter or an image I cannot put aside. Painting gives those experiences a form that I can return to and develop.

Certain objects and motifs keep finding their way into my work. Their significance grows as they reappear, building connections between paintings and becoming part of a personal vocabulary.

When I make a portrait, I am looking for what makes that person distinct. Each mark is a way of bringing that character into focus and making the image more precise.
