Portrait of Varvara

Portrait of Varvara is an original watercolor portrait in which likeness is developed through transparent washes, restrained color, and a deliberately loose treatment of form. Warm browns and muted skin tones are set against deeper red and violet shapes, while areas of untouched paper remain visible throughout the composition.

Rather than describing every detail, the work relies on a small number of lines, tonal shifts, and layered washes to establish the face and presence of the sitter. The open handling of watercolor allows the material itself to remain visible, giving the portrait a light, spontaneous character while keeping the figure at the center of the image.
