Portrait of Rue in a mask

Portrait of Rue in a mask is an original graphite portrait in which the sitter’s face is framed by the broad, irregular contours of a mask. Delicate pencil lines establish the eyes, nose and lips, while softly layered shading gives volume to the face and the surrounding folds. The composition places the figure slightly off-center, leaving open areas of toned paper around the head.

The drawing moves between precise facial details and loosely indicated outer forms. Subtle changes in pressure create a restrained range of gray tones, allowing the paper’s warm ground and texture to remain part of the image. The close framing keeps attention on the sitter’s expression and the relationship between the face and its covering.
