Portrait of Sophie

Portrait of Sophie is a compact graphite drawing centered on a face framed by loosely outlined hair. Soft tonal transitions shape the forehead, cheeks and neck, while darker pencil marks give definition to the eyes, nose and lips. Dense shading around the head sets the lighter figure apart from the background.

The portrait combines broad areas of graphite with fine, searching lines that remain visible in the hair and along the shoulders. The paper’s texture breaks through the shaded passages, keeping the drawing’s surface present throughout. Within its small vertical format, the contrast between the pale face and darker surroundings holds attention on the sitter’s gaze and expression.
