Rue is shown in a pink garment with a broad white ruffled bib, against a loosely brushed grey-green background. Warm tones in the face and visible oil brushwork give this small portrait on panel its distinct surface.

About the Work

About the Painting

Rue is portrayed from the chest up, with the head turned slightly to one side. A broad white ruffled bib crosses the shoulders above a pink garment, setting pale fabric against warmer color. The face is built with ochre, rose and light yellow tones, while the hair and darker accents define the features.

Loose grey-green strokes fill the background without describing a specific setting. The oil paint remains visible in the clothing, the bib and the surrounding surface. Within the vertical panel, the face and the white fabric form the main points of attention.
