About the Work

About the Painting

This self-portrait concentrates on the head and upper shoulders within a narrow sheet of paper. The face turns slightly to one side, while the eyes look towards the viewer. Short graphite lines describe the hair, and lighter marks establish the neck, shirt and outline of the shoulders.

Soft shading gives the cheeks, nose and area around the eyes their form. Much of the surrounding paper remains unmarked, keeping attention on the features. The small format and restrained range of tones make individual lines easy to follow across the drawing.
