An enlarged view of a winged insect, with yellow bands, dark outlines and translucent wings. Grey, violet and pale blue washes bring out the segmented body against the textured paper.

About the Work

About the Painting

A winged insect with a yellow and dark striped abdomen fills most of this small watercolor. Its body crosses the sheet at an angle, with the head and curved antennae towards the right. Pale wings extend into the background, outlined more lightly than the legs and segmented body.

Yellow bands stand against grey and violet shadows, while muted blue and green washes surround the insect. The grain of the paper remains visible through the color. The close view brings the shape of the abdomen, the fine limbs and the spread of the wings into a compact composition.
